CWLP efficiency rebates

CWLP's newly expanded insulation rebate is getting some news and advertising exposure. Its one of the first of what will hopefully be many new and expanded programs CWLP will offer resulting from the Sierra Club clean energy agreement.

Springfield became a national leader as a renewable energy user following the agreement and it now has the potential to become a national leader in energy efficiency and conservation efforts as well. The best part is that not only can customers experience lower bills by participating in the programs, but we can also play a role in shaping them.

CWLP is seeking public involvement in developing its energy efficiency programs at a series of Smart Energy Forums. Turn out has been a little disappointing so far. The next one is Thursday, October 18 at UIS. You don't see private utilities like Ameren doing public forums like this so I hope more people will take advantage of this chance to tell their utility what they want.

Also exciting is that CWLP will begin a net-metering program. The most frequent question I had at the environmental tent at the State Fair was about net-metering for people who install solar panels. Hopefully, CWLP will begin promoting that program soon.

I wrote an article for Illinois Engineer magazine on green construction and LEED certification. You're correct that most of the building is in the Chicago area, in great part because of Mayor Daley's commitment to the movement. The industry in general does seem to be moving towards sustainable design and I think you'll soon see more of it throughout the state.

One place you may see it is Wal-Mart. They are incorporating green principles into their store designs. They're doing a lot with LED lighting, windpower, and even waterless urinals. You never know who might be on your side.
