Against Me!

I read some good reviews about the new band Against Me. Rolling Stone magazine praised them as the best of what they're calling punk these days. I usually like bands with a left wing political bent in their lyrics. It's more interesting than yet another predictable love song and maybe someone who puts more thought into what they're saying also gives more thought to the instrumentation.

So, I downloaded a few songs by Against Me! and I'm not impressed. One of their singles, "Stop" has these lyrics in the chorus, "Stop! Take some time to think, figure out what’s important to you.
You’ve got to make a serious decision."

My how provocative. I had no idea my high school civics teacher was writing lyrics for a lame punk band. Shopping mall pop-punk is getting tired and has been done better. Compare that to a band like Rage Against the Machine that actually had something interesting to say and a tremendously more creative lead guitar player.

Against Me! is joining System of a Down on my list of political rock bands I can't like no matter how hard I try. Excuse me while I put American Idiot in the stereo to get these bad songs out of my head.
