Clean Car Traveling Road Show

Over a year ago I agreed to chair the Illinois Chapter of the Sierra Club's Clean Car campaign and I've been blogging about cars ever since. The main campaign objective is to support the Illinois Clean Car Act that would have Illinois join the 14 other states adopting the higher Pavley auto emissions standards. I was hoping we'd be done by now but since the Illinois General Assembly failed to act, we're still pushing.

Election season is the perfect time to hold legislators responsible for their actions (or inaction), and several statewide environmental groups are asking candidates to commit to passing the bill next year. As part of that effort, I'm doing several powerpoint programs around the state to let people know more about the bill and build public support for reducing toxic emissions.

The focus will be on the Illinois Clean Car Act, what it will do, and why reducing vehicle emissions is an important part of the effort to curb global warming. The second part is a brief overview of alternatives to our current transportation options and debunking some popular myths heard in the debate over high gas prices and alternative fuels. By the end of the program I hope you'll have a good understanding of the overall national and state debate over a complex issue.

The most important point in the debate

Many important things were said at the McCain-Obama debate last night but there's one comment from Obama that I was very glad to hear.

And the problem, John, with the strategy that's been pursued was that, for 10 years, we coddled Musharraf, we alienated the Pakistani population, because we were anti-democratic. We had a 20th-century mindset that basically said, "Well, you know, he may be a dictator, but he's our dictator." And as a consequence, we lost legitimacy in Pakistan.
We aided some nasty dictators and terrorists during the Cold War, including Saddam Hussein and Bin-Laden, because they were willing to fight communists. Some people are determined not to learn any lessons from that and repeat those mistakes in the war on terror.

People in other nations make the connection when a US-backed dictator destroys a village, kills innocent civilians, jails political dissidents or conducts torture campaigns by troops trained by the U.S. military. As Americans, we rarely hear anything in the media about what our government is doing overseas, but people in other countries are fully aware.

That's a discussion many people would like to avoid. They'd prefer to ignore the past and pretend that our actions don't have consequences. George Bush was avoiding that discussion after 9/11 when he said, "They hate us for our freedoms." It was the most idiotic and disingenuous statement a President has ever made.

Obama's comment gives me hope that he learned form the mistakes that were made and that he understands America is stronger when we support freedom and human rights around the world. Not repeating those old mistakes, some of which were carried out in the 70's and 80's by Cheney, Rumsfeld and Kissinger, will do more to stop a future terrorist attack than a million new airport safety officers ever could.

The McCain Doctrine

John McCain had some...interesting things to say last night. He apparently endorsed the destruction of basic economic institutions when he said that, "This isn't the beginning of the end of this crisis. This is the end of the beginning, if we come out with a package that will keep these institutions stable."

He looked pretty shaken up and slow during the first five or ten minutes but something seemed to kick in after that. One of the more interesting random notes was pointing out that South Koreans are three inches taller than North Koreans. I guess I see his point but what an odd thing to throw out there.

Or, perhaps he was introducing a new policy vision. The McCain Doctrine should now be known as the bold idea that we determine our allies based on the average height of its citizens. I did a quick google search and found that, according to the McCain Doctrine, the strongest U.S. allies should be the Northern European socialist democracies.

I'd like to offer my services to the McCain team by conducting a goodwill tour of our soon-to-be strongest allies, Denmark, Netherlands, Sweden and Norway. I won't charge too much after expenses. I'll watch an Ingmar Bergman film tonight in preparation while I wait to hear from the campaign.

Colleen Callahan endorsed by Sierra Club

One thing that distinguishes the Sierra Club from many other environmental groups is that it makes political endorsements and backs them up with grass-roots action by their membership across the country. The Club recently endorsed Colleen Callahan for Congress in the 18th district.

CCallahan.jpg

A list of endorsed candidates is included in the recent Illinois Chapter newsletter, and the Illinois Sierra Club website has more up to date endorsements as they're made. It includes a recent endorsement in another central Illinois race; Jehan Gordon for State Representative in Peoria.

I was lucky enough to sit in on the candidate interview with Colleen Callahan. I was impressed by her frank answers, her time on the Nature Conservancy board, her enthusiasm for locally grown, community supported agriculture, and her commitment to taking action on global warming. The first and most detailed policy position on her website is about clean energy.

When compared to the lackluster voting record and double talk from her opponent, there's a clear choice in this race. Callahan will represent those who care about the environment and clean energy issues while Aaron Schock parrots the agenda of special interest polluters.

I've already volunteered and donated to Callahan's campaign. This is an important race for an open Congressional seat that I believe is worth the extra time and attention.

Aaron Schock's energy hypocrisy

18th District Congressional candidate Aaron Schock is currently running ads that repeat the national Republican Party talking points about energy policy complete with pictures of windmills.

At a recent press conference announcing his rumored energy plan he parroted language that's often used by industry special interests who want large public subsidies for polluting sources of power, while making token efforts for renewable energy and efficiency projects. He specifically mentioned several items at the top of the agenda for pro-pollution lobbyists, including drilling in ANWR and off-shore. They would have us believe that this will lower gas prices but the minor increase in supply won't come close to matching the increase in demand from China and India.

Is Aaron Schock's plan any different than what's being offered by the polluting industries? I went to his website to look for details and found that he has no "issues" page at all and no information on the "news" page about the specifics of his energy plan. It looks like the only thing turning the windmills in his ads is hot air.

Contrast that to Colleen Callahan, who has had a detailed and specific clean energy plan on her website for weeks.

Every politician claims to be green during election season, but as the good book says, "by their works ye shall know them." The Illinois Environmental Council's legislative scorecard shows that as a State Representative, Schock worked for the environment less than half the time, earning 33% and 44% ratings in the last two sessions.

Specifically, Schock voted against one of the most important clean energy bills to pass the Illinois General Assembly in many years. The IEC scorecard states that under SB 1592,

"25 percent of the electricity procured for Illinois customers will be generated from clean, renewable energy by 2025, such as wind power, biomass and solar power, making Illinois one of the top states in the country for goals for renewables. The efficiency program ramps up to a target of reducing load by 2 percent per year. Together, the two provisions will reduce global warming emissions by tens of millions of metric tons every year and save consumers roughly $2 billion dollars per year by 2020."
It passed the House by a margin of 80-33-1, despite Schock's opposition.

Hypocrite.jpg

Schock said at his press conference that energy efficiency is an important part of the solution be he was absent for a vote on HB 1842 that required more energy efficient building practices for homes. More recently, he failed to sign on as a co-sponsor to the Illinois Clean Car Act that will improve fuel economy and reduce vehicle emissions. He must believe that no one will look up his record or hold him accountable for his actions.

Schock's windmill ad is a case of green lipstick on a pig. The oil companies and other polluting special interests already have enough high paid lobbyists in Washington. They don't need another one sent to Congress at taxpayer expense.

Update added on 9/26: The Schock campaign must have taken notice because they finally added a statement about his energy plan on their website today, several days after their news conference. At first glance it looks long on rhetoric and short on details. I'll take a closer look and write more about it soon.

Iron Jawed Angels

Last week's Liberty Brew & View double feature had a good turnout and I was happy to hear people say how much they loved both movies. State's Attorney candidate Ron Stradt stopped by and spoke about his campaign before Shut Up and Sing started. If you couldn't make it last Tuesday, Meeting Resistance and Shut Up and Sing are both worth finding to view on your own.

October will feature an election-themed movie, Iron Jawed Angels, a historical drama about two suffragist leaders, starring Hilary Swank.

IRON JAWED ANGELS recounts for a contemporary audience a key chapter in U.S. history: in this case, the struggle of suffragists who fought for the passage of the 19th Amendment. Focusing on the two defiant women, Alice Paul (Hilary Swank) and Lucy Burns (Frances O'Connor), the film shows how these activists broke from the mainstream women's-rights movement and created a more radical wing, daring to push the boundaries of political protest to secure women's voting rights in 1920. Breathing life into the relationships between Paul, Burns and others, the movie makes the women feel like complete characters instead of one-dimensional figures from a distant past.
Read the full synopsis here. It's an exciting movie with important relevance to modern day issues.

After the movie a speaker will discuss the petition being circulated by the ACLU and other groups in support of the Illinois Reproductive Justice and Access Act (House Bill 5615). If you've been to certain political events you may have noticed women collecting petition signatures. Read more about the act and petition drive at the Illinois ACLU website.

I've shown movies on several topics and I thought it was about time I picked one on women's rights. I think its particularly relevant this election year.

Fun with hotlinks

For those who aren't as web-nerdy, hotlinking is the practice of displaying an image on your website that's still hosted on another persons web server. Its rude because it steals the other person's bandwidth. Some web masters respond by making the image appear as something different, and usually very disgusting, on the guilty party's website.

Personally, I don't care if people hotlink my images as long as it isn't a high traffic website that uses a lot of bandwidth. One time ESPN hotlinked a SIUC Saluki logo in their sports discussion board that got way to much traffic for my server to handle. Its ESPN. They can afford to download the image to their own servers. Jerks.

Last May I noticed that a lot of bandwidth was being used to view a Chris Britt cartoon about ethanol that I saved to my server and wrote about. Someone hotlinked it at Free Republic, a discussion forum full of the angriest fringe of the conservative talk radio crowd.

Free Republic was mentioned in Shut Up and Sing for posting phone numbers of country radio stations after the Dixie Chicks said they were against the war in Iraq. Their members called stations around the country, pretending to be from the area, and threatened to never listen to the station again if they played the Dixie Chicks. It provided an excuse for conservative Clearchannel to censor the Dixie Chicks from country radio throughout the South.

Anyway, I decided to reload a different image onto my sever with the same name as the image they hotlinked. The result was several hours of Free Republic showing their enthusiastic support for Barack Obama. Click on the image below to see a screen capture.

I dedicate this petty prank to Natalie Maines.

Note to my fellow male voters

I've been surprised at some of the otherwise reasonable men who have been saying good things about Sarah Palin. They'll mention how good looking she is but leave off the part about her being a completely unqualified extremist who doesn't believe in things like science.

SarahPalinNo.jpg

There's something important men should remember when they vote. No matter how much you support John McCain, Sarah Palin is not going to have sex with you. Not gonna happen. She won't pose in playboy either. Seriously. Don't forget this important fact on election day. She doesn't think your sexy for voting Republican and she isn't going to be anywhere near your bed anytime soon. Give it up and vote with the head on your shoulders.

Life in Central Illinois

The international spotlight shined on Central Illinois when Barack Obama announced his Presidential campaign and his Vice Presidential running mate at the Old State Capitol. And now this:

The liquor license for a Canton business will be suspended for 60 days because two women wrestled topless at a recent “midget wrestling event.”

Stay classy, Central Illinois!

Large turnout for cool forum

CWLP holds Smart Energy Forums every two months and last night's meeting was the largest turnout I've seen since the one held at UIS last year when a crowd of students came. Besides having a good crowd, I was happy to see leaders from the business community show interest. I met new people that I don't know from the Sierra Club, and that's important because this needs to be an effort that reaches beyond environmental activists.

Mayor Davlin declaring Springfield a Cool City has already produced results by signaling to local leaders that renewable energy and efficiency efforts are a major priority for the city and that it needs to be a community-wide effort. I was very encouraged by how many new faces came to learn about the Cool Cities program and the detailed questions they asked.

cool%20cities.jpg

After my power point presentation on Cool Cities, Bob Croteau, from the CWLP Energy Services Office, gave an update on everything their office has been working on recently and what's coming in the near future. One highlight is the new rebate and recycling program for old refrigerators. New refrigerators are much more energy efficient so CWLP will pick up older units and recycle them for you. More details about that program will be available soon.

Bob also mentioned that CWLP will soon sell renewable energy certificates (RECs). Customers who want more of their energy to come from renewable sources will be able to purchase RECs to promote additional clean energy use on the grid. Plus, there's too much happening for me to summarize on my blog so come to the next meeting in November for all the news.

Twice now, I've heard Mayor Davlin brag about Springfield being named one of the top 30 greenest cities in America and say that he wants us to be named one of the top ten. Springfield is already doing much, especially following the CWLP-Sierra Club power plant agreement, and I get the exciting feeling that the city is about to reach a new level of environmental action.

Screw you Bob Lutz!

I might make the "screw you" posts a regular series. Last night I happened to see GM Vice Chairman Bot Lutz on the Colbert Report to talk about the Chevy Volt. He said he believes global warming is caused by sunspots, not CO2, as the scientific community overwhelmingly believes. In other words, he's a zealot that shouldn't be taken seriously. After the interview I got the feeling that most of the American auto industry executives need to admit that their business model failed spectacularly and resign to make room for new people who can adapt to the times.

Stephen Colbert jokingly asked Lutz if the Volt will get a guy laid. Lutz said you might attract certain types of women who are environmental activists and don't wear makeup. Nice.

You know what Bob? I like dating environmental activist women. I appreciate a women who's informed and cares enough to do something. I'm more attracted to a woman who isn't easily fooled by a talk radio host or oil industry lobbyist who tells creative stories about man-made CO2 not contributing to global warming. One day I'll drive a Tesla roadster to Green Fest and take an electric car load of tree-hugging hotties for a spin (at least in my dreams).

Incidentally, did you know that Scarlett Johansson's latest act of environmental activism is to participate in a campaign to promote recycling cell phones? Answer The Call will give you a postage paid form to mail your cell phone for safe recycling to keep toxins out of landfills.

ScarlettJohansson.jpg
(Tree-hugging activist Scarlett Johansson probably thinks electric cars are sexy)

The interview reminded me of the smarmy SUV commercial where a kid doesn't want his dad to drive him to practice in "that part of town" with "those people" over there who look down on people that don't drive hybrids. Give me a break. What marketing genius decided that the way to sell a hybrid is to insult your environmentally conscious customer base?

I want to like what GM is doing with the Volt but Lutz, along with their lobbying against Pavley emissions standards, is making it very hard.

Here's the interview:

Hear me talk about cool stuff

There are several good events going on tonight so I'm giving one last plug for CWLP's Smart Energy Forum. They'll give an update on new efficiency programs and seek feedback from the public.

Part of the meeting will be me giving a power point presentation describing the Cool Cities program with examples of what other cities are doing. It's tonight (Thursday) 6:00pm, Illinois National Bank, Fourth and Jackson Streets.

Chevy Volt in the news

There's a lot of news today about GM showing off the production model of their first plug-in hybrid, the Chevy Volt, due in 2010. Ideally, I'd like my next car to be a plug-in hybrid (assuming I can eventually afford one) because it offers the best combination of high fuel economy, long distance driving ability, and low emission levels.

Treehugger has several posts including photos, specs and videos from GM.

ChevyVolt.jpg

I'm really enjoying the irony that after years of using scare tactics to claim that better fuel economy standards would cost American jobs, GM is now looking to an environmentally friendly plug-in hybrid to save their company. I'd like to think that the auto-industry, and other industries, will put that old boogie man to rest, but I'd be surprised if they did.

The leadership of the United Auto Workers should remember this the next time they think about siding with company scare tactics against environmental regulations. They weren't doing their members any favors when they argued against better CAFE standards. GM should have started going this direction years ago.

Ike & Tina

My mom thinks there's a generational divide among those who think of Eisenhower or Ike & Tina Turner when they hear about Hurricane Ike. I think of Ike & Tina, but its not as though they're from my generation, except for the movie. Anyway, they made some great music.

Cool Meetings

Now that Mayor Davlin has declared Springfield a Cool City, what does that mean besides a press conference and a piece of paper? What are the next steps? How much will it cost and does the public have a say in what happens?

Those questions are the topic of the next CWLP Smart Energy forum. The Sierra Club will participate to explain the Cool Cities agreement in detail followed by time for questions and comments.

The Energy & Climate Change Committee will start meeting again before the regular Sierra Club membership meeting; Tuesday, September 23, 6:00pm, Lincoln Library. This meeting is for Sierra Club members and anyone else who wants to get more active in clean energy and global warming issues in the Springfield area.

Apologies to news anchors

I'm hard on the news media but I went too far in my last post when I wrote that Sarah Palin is qualified to be a news anchor because she was able to read a speech written by someone else from a teleprompter. Many news anchors spend hours doing their own research and writing their own stories. And they don't always have the benefit of a teleprompter. Being a TV news reporter isn't easy and I'm not yet convinced that Palin is qualified for the job.

September 7, 2008

Sarah Palin is qualified

Sarah Palin read a speech someone else wrote for her from a teleprompter. She proved that she's perfectly qualified. If she's running for TV news anchor. Then again, TV news anchors aren't usually afraid of giving interviews even if the interviewer doesn't promise to be extra nice, so maybe she's not qualified to do that either.

A President demanding a deferential attitude from the press is how we got into the Iraq War without his lies being challenged. I've had about enough of that garbage.

Screw you Rudy Giuliani

I’ve heard seemingly endless stories about John McCain’s POW and military experience while watching the Republican convention speeches. I respect anyone who signs up to defend American safety and freedoms, including John McCain.

But, I’m getting a little tired of Republican leaders acting like there’s only one way to serve your country. Rudy Giuliani scoffed and mocked Barack Obama’s service as a community organizer. Obama was willing to knock on doors in some of the poorest neighborhoods in America. The kind of places Rudy didn't visit when he was Mayor. Obama chose to pass up better paying jobs so he could serve others.

I actually believe that volunteering in the community and working on political issues can be a form of service to our country. Apparently, Giuliani thinks that kind of service isn’t worth anything more than a snide laugh. So on behalf of everyone who ever got involved in serving their community I say, screw you Rudy Giuliani! There are plenty of ways to serve America without a gun in your hand.

After ignoring Obama’s management experience directing a voter registration drive that registered hundreds of thousands of new voters in Chicago (not at the direction of the machine) Giuliani claimed that Obama has less experience than any candidate in at least 100 years. He said it's an absolute fact. Last night Fred Thompson said Obama was the least experienced of any candidate in history.

The Republican speakers are lying to you. They’re doing it repeatedly (like claiming that Obama passed no reforms) but this is a very easy one to disprove. One hundred years ago the Democratic Party nominated Williams Jennings Bryan at their 1908 convention in Colorado. His only experience in elected office was a term in Congress and he was known mostly for his public speaking.

Eight years ago the Republican Party nominated someone with fewer years in elected office than Obama and absolutely zero experience at the federal level. I wish the Republican Party had been so worried about experience eight years ago when they nominated a Governor who road through life on his Dad’s last name against a sitting Vice President. Then we wouldn't be in this mess.

By the way, did anyone notice Rudy say that McCain was going to expand free trade and less than a minute later claim he would stop sending jobs overseas? What exactly does he think is sending those jobs overseas? That’s like saying you’re going to stop a flood by praying for more rain.

And what were all the references to “cosmopolitan” and “San Francisco” about? Gee, that was subtle. Why don’t they just get Arnold to come onstage and call Obama a girly man city slicker? Give me a break. What does that say about Rudy's maturity level? Don't most people stop those kind of childish taunts sometime after they finish high school? Grow up, Rudy.

It says a lot that the convention floor chanted for more drilling. It won’t lower gas prices and it won’t make us independent of foreign oil. But the oil companies want it so the Republican Party does too. Could it be any more obvious that this is officially the party of the oil industry? Is it any surprise that their Vice Presidential nominee's husband works for an oil company? Is this what people want after eight disastrous years of two oilmen in the White House?

Rudy Giuliani was the perfect keynote speaker for the talk radio conservative crowd. He misrepresented Obama’s words. He made contradictory statements and expected no one to notice. He tried to tell people that what’s good for corporate special interests is good for everyone. He pretended to be a populist everyman and expected no one to point out that he’s a rich big city mayor. He claimed his party expands freedom but expects us to forget the patriot act, extraordinary rendition, and everything his conservative allies did to silence anyone who spoke out against the war. His speech was full of petty insults and condescending laughter. He perfectly represented the nasty, bitterly partisan talk radio attitude that is destroying American politics.

I've been telling friends to expect a lot of personal insults and terrorism fear-mongering from the Republican convention because that's the only way they know how to win. That's exactly what we got tonight. Rudy said he doesn't know who Democrats are offending. I know who Rudy is offending: The intelligence of the American voter.

Happy Labor Day!

Union Maid - Pete Seeger & Arlo Guthrie

I saw Pete Seeger play with his grandson at the Shryock Auditorium when I was a SEIU organizer in Southern Illinois. Its still one of the best concerts I've even been to.

Cool Green Cash

Now that Springfield has joined "larger" Illinois cities such as Carbondale, Alton, Moline, Normal and East Peoria in signing onto the US Council of Mayors Climate Protection Agreement its a good opportunity to start looking at ways to reduce carbon emissions that save money by reducing energy costs.

When I think about energy efficiency I remember my mom telling me not to leave the door open when the air conditioning is on. Everyone got that lecture when they were a kid, right? Energy efficiency projects are increasingly technical, or sometimes very simple, ways of not leaving the doors and windows open while the air is on. Sure, it may take some extra effort to get up off the couch and close the door but you'll stop wasting money afterward.

The Cool Cities website has many examples of municipalities saving money after an initial investment. I also found a link to the Playbook for Green Buildings and Neighborhoods, which will keep me busy reading for a while.

leedgold.jpg

The playbook states that, "Green schools add 2% to construction costs but result in financial benefits worth 20 times as much," and "Upfront cost increases for green buildings range from nothing to 2% and lower the expected lifetime operating costs by 20% — 10 times the initial investment." (Kats, 2006)

That's something District #186, Lincoln Land Community College and Sangamon County should be thinking about since they're all considering new buildings. Any unit of local government that tries to build on the cheap up front without using modern energy efficient building practices must be considered negligent in their waste of taxpayer dollars.
