Iron Jawed Angels
Last week's Liberty Brew & View double feature had a good turnout and I was happy to hear people say how much they loved both movies. State's Attorney candidate Ron Stradt stopped by and spoke about his campaign before Shut Up and Sing started. If you couldn't make it last Tuesday, Meeting Resistance and Shut Up and Sing are both worth finding to view on your own.
October will feature an election-themed movie, Iron Jawed Angels, a historical drama about two suffragist leaders, starring Hilary Swank.
IRON JAWED ANGELS recounts for a contemporary audience a key chapter in U.S. history: in this case, the struggle of suffragists who fought for the passage of the 19th Amendment. Focusing on the two defiant women, Alice Paul (Hilary Swank) and Lucy Burns (Frances O'Connor), the film shows how these activists broke from the mainstream women's-rights movement and created a more radical wing, daring to push the boundaries of political protest to secure women's voting rights in 1920. Breathing life into the relationships between Paul, Burns and others, the movie makes the women feel like complete characters instead of one-dimensional figures from a distant past.Read the full synopsis here. It's an exciting movie with important relevance to modern day issues.
After the movie a speaker will discuss the petition being circulated by the ACLU and other groups in support of the Illinois Reproductive Justice and Access Act (House Bill 5615). If you've been to certain political events you may have noticed women collecting petition signatures. Read more about the act and petition drive at the Illinois ACLU website.
I've shown movies on several topics and I thought it was about time I picked one on women's rights. I think its particularly relevant this election year.

Hi Will,
Great movie choice! Thanks for remembering the suffragettes!
We NEED to know this history...
Thanks to the suffragettes, women have voices and choices!
But HOW did Alice Paul and Carrie Catt win votes for women, and what was life REALLY like for women before they did?
"The Privilege of Voting" is an exciting series of dramatic, sequential e-mail episodes that reveal ALL that happened on the very rocky road to the ballot box.
The e-mail series augments the history shown in Iron Jawed Angels, taking a broader look at how the suffragettes succeeded in the repressive society in which they lived.
Shocking, sad, sexy, very inspiring, all TRUE and FREE!
Read this e-mail series on your coffeebreaks and fall in love with these amazing women...
