Joppa Coal Ash
Coal ash is getting more scrutiny after the catastrophic spill in Tennessee. A coal combustion waste landfill proposed by an Ameren subsidiary in Southern Illinois is receiving some unwanted attention. A local TV station did a good report on a public hearing for the 23 acre landfill proposed in Joppa.
The coal industry is used to operating freely in rural areas desperate for jobs at any cost. They're increasingly confronted by local residents armed with the facts about public health threats and determined to get real green jobs in their community.
The timing for this permit is interesting since the federal EPA is considering new regulations. There's still time to weigh in on both the Joppa coal waste landfill and federal regulation.
