Obama stands up for clean air with veto threat

Awesome! President Obama issued a veto threat against the Murkowski resolution, which would stop the EPA from regulating major new sources of pollutants that cause global warming.

You can read the full statement at the White House website.

The Administration strongly opposes Senate passage of S.J. Res. 26, which would undermine the Clean Air Act and hinder EPA’s ability to comply with a Supreme Court ruling on greenhouse gasses (GHGs). The Administration believes that comprehensive energy and climate legislation is the most effective way to transition to a clean energy economy that will create jobs, protect the environment, and increase national security. S.J. Res. 26 would do just the opposite; it would increase the Nation’s dependence on oil and other fossil fuels and block efforts to cut pollution that threatens our health and well-being.

Environment Illinois issued an analysis today showing that Murkowski's folly would "increase Illinois oil dependence by 17 million gallons and increase Illinoisans fuel costs by $44 million in 2016 alone."

Endangered Senator Blanch Lincoln is one of the few Democrats who signed onto the resolution along with Mary Landrieu of Louisiana. It's ironic that Senators from two states with the most to lose from climate change disasters (Alaska and Louisiana) are the ones choosing to place short-term profits of the fossil fuel industry over the health and safety of their constituents.

It's so unbelievable how these two senators can behave very irresponsible, especially after the disasters that have taken place. Some people just never learn!
