I support the ground zero Muslim center for the same reason I opposed Prop 8.

The two issues don't have much in common. But advocates of the anti-gay-marriage Proposition 8 in California and opponents of the Muslim cultural center have at least one thing in common: they spread fear, prejudice and hate.

Hate spreads when released. Sometimes it spreads in ways that the original perpetrators did not anticipate. It happened Tuesday in New York City.

A cabdriver was attacked Tuesday by a knife-wielding passenger who had asked him about his Muslim practices, the police said.

And it happened in California the same year that prop 8 was on the ballot.
Lawrence King, an eighth grader who identified as gay and wore makeup and nail polish, was 15 when he was declared brain dead on Feb. 13. The day before, he had been shot in the head in an Oxnard, Calif., classroom full of students. Police have charged a sweet-faced boy called Brandon McInerney, 14, with first-degree murder and with a hate crime.

I could have pulled from many more examples of lesser crimes.
