Since it’s not so easy to achieve effective weight loss simply via diet management and exercise, people are now opting for herbal and pharmaceutical medicines for this purpose. It’s scientifically proven that Forskolin is a natural stimulator and regulator of an enzyme adenylate cyclase which in turn stimulates the synthesis of cAMP i.e. Cyclic Adenosine Monophosphate. Untill today, only two major and authentic scientific studies have been carried out to analyze the effects of Forskolin on weight loss in humans.

In one study, the changes in the body composition and hormonal levels were studied with the consumption of Forskolin in obese and overweight men. It was a comparative, double-blind study which was conducted on a total of 30 subjects. Since it was a comparative study, 15 men were treated with Forskolin while 15 were given placebo for twelve weeks.

It was observed that the subjects treated with Forskolin showed favorable alterations in their body composition by a significant decrease in their total fat mass and body fat percentage, because of an increase in their serum testosterone levels , whereas, no such effects were observed in subjects which were given placebo. Hence, it was concluded from the study that Forskolin can be used as a possible pharmacological agent for the management and treatment of obesity. [3]

The second study was conducted on mildly overweight women to check the effects of Forskolin on body composition and to determine the safety of supplementation. The results obtained from the study suggested that Forskolin didn’t promote significant weight loss; however, it did help to stop further weight gain in overweight females, with no threatening side effects. [4]

Hence, it can be concluded that Forskolin can have mild effect on weight loss along with significant lipid-metabolism and a decrease in total body fat percentage. However, more scientific evidence is needed to support or strengthen its use as a potential weight-reducing agent.

Forskolin Dosage

The recommended dosage of Forskolin is about 25 to 60mg\day, in order to allow the body to adjust and adapt to Forskolin consumption. 125mg and 250mg Forskolin tablets are also available in the market. What you need to consider is whether you’re getting Forskolin’s pure natural extract or not. Always choose a supplement which has at least 20% pure Forskolin extract or more.

Are There Any Adverse Effects Associated With Forskolin Consumption?

After aggressive testing and comprehensive research studies, it was concluded that there are no threatening adverse effects associated with Forskolin intake [4] However, significant lowering of blood pressure was observed in individuals who were consuming 150mg of Forskolin per day. So it’s recommended to consult a registered medical practitioner if you’re already taking other anti-hypertensive agents so that the doses are tapered accordingly and there’s no threat for the patient of slipping into life-threatening hypotension.

Also, Forskolin can act as a fluctuating blood thinner, hence, if you’re consuming other blood thinners such as; Aspirin, Heparin, or Warfarin, it’s recommended not to start Forskolin therapy without a doctor’s recommendation.

Other than that, the common side effects of Forskolin are mild daytime dizziness and nausea. Forskolin has been awarded NOAEL i.e. ‘No Observed Adverse Effect Level’ in a scientific study regarding Forskolin consumption and its safety. This means that as long as Forskolin is consumed as per the recommended dose in healthy individuals, it’s safe and well-tolerated with no potential harmful effects. [5]

Pregnant and breast-feeding women are strongly recommended not to start Forskolin therapy without proper consultation with their gynecologist as Forskolin may cross the placental barrier and induce harmful effects in the fetus such as thinning of blood and lowering of blood pressure. Also, children under the age of 18 shouldn’t start Forskolin consumption without getting proper recommended dose according to their BMI i.e. Body Mass Ratio.
