Skin problems? We have the simple solution

Skin care is one of the essential aspects of our physical or personal well-being. Perhaps this is why there is a plethora of readily-available over-the-counter skin care creams. The range available in the market is vast and no two products are the same. Some differ in their intended effects or chemical compositions, while others in their claims or the skin types they’re suitable for.

Consumers usually utilize skin care creams like Nerium for dermal hygiene, protection from the adverse environmental effects, or to treat the myriad skin problems they encounter. On the one hand, the easy availability and the wide range of choices when it comes to skin care creams is a boon for the average consumer. On the other hand, it can be overwhelming to walk into the skincare aisle.

How to choose the perfect skin care cream? What to do and what to avoid? These are some of the questions that become crucial, as some skin care creams may be wildly expensive and others may make bold claims they cannot fulfill. Also, most importantly, choosing the wrong products may further damage your skin rather than improving it. Therefore, when it comes to choosing the best skin care cream, you need to bear in mind the following considerations.

Determine your skin type

The first step when choosing the perfect skin care cream for yourself is to know your skin type. If you don’t do that, you may easily waste money on the wrong skin care product which may do more harm than good. Determining your skin type involves assessing the type of skin you have and visiting your dermatologist to discuss specific problems you may encounter while using any skin care cream.

When assessing your skin yourself, you must know the following:

Your skin type: Is your skin dry, oily, or somewhere in between? Is it normal or sensitive or a combination of both? You can know your skin type by washing your face with warm water and dabbing it with a facial tissue after a few minutes to determine whether there is any oil residue. It is also advisable to consult your physician while assessing your skin type.

Your complexion: Do you have a fair or a dark complexion? Some lighter toned skins can tan or burn easily, while darker complexions may not burn as frequently.

Your skin issues: Before even approaching the skin care counter, it is essential to consider why you want a skin care cream or any other product. What purpose must it serve? Do you want a skin care product for regular care or to prevent aging? Or are you looking for solutions to specific skin problems such as acne or age spots?

Your habits and lifestyle: Aside from knowing your skin type and problems, it is extremely helpful to consider your personal habits that may have an impact on your skin. For instance, activities like smoking can cause wrinkles or early aging effects. Your eating and drinking habits may also have a considerable effect.

Skin care for aging

One of the most common reasons for people to consider the use of skin care creams is to reduce the effects of aging such as wrinkles or dark spots. Anti-aging products comprise of a significant percentage of the skin care market. Some estimates suggest that, in all of the skin care market, anti-aging products account for a staggering 9.8 billion dollars. This indicates more than a hundred percent increase since 1997. But the abundance and diversity of these products makes it difficult to choose the right anti-aging cream that suits your skin the best.

When buying a skin care cream for anti-aging purposes, you need to consider the difference between drugs and cosmetics. While the regulation and approval of drugs falls under the control of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), many cosmetic products are not approved by the FDA when they hit the market. Therefore, it is advisable to consult with your physician before using any of the over-the-counter anti-aging creams.

Many skin care experts also suggest that the daily application of sunscreens is essential to maintain a youthful skin. The presence of titanium oxide or zinc oxide in sunscreens protects the skin from the adverse effects of the sun’s rays, including premature wrinkles. [1]

Skin care for persistent acne

Another common use of skin care creams is as treatment of what is known scientifically as acne vulgaris. The good news is that many skin care creams are readily available to treat the effects of acne. The bad news, on the other hand, is that research suggests some of these products, if used without recommendation, can actually harm your skin further. [2]

Skin care creams for acne work best when combined with a rigorous skin care routine. This may involve regular cleaning of the skin, moisturizing, use of medications, and protection from environmental effects. A change in lifestyle can also significantly improve the impact of anti-acne skin care creams.

Skin care during pregnancy

A pregnancy usually brings a host of skin problems, along with it, including acne or unwanted hair growth. The physiological changes experienced during pregnancies are due to the release of androgen in the body. These secondary problems may be treated by the use of skin care creams. However, you must take a great deal of care while using the products to ensure that no complications arise due to any of the active ingredients.

When choosing skin care creams during pregnancies, you need to consider the systemic absorption rates of the active ingredients in the products. Research suggests that hydroquinone, which may be found in skin-lightening creams has a relatively high absorption rate (around 35-45 percent). While it may not be clear that the presence of hydroquinone directly leads to malformation or has an adverse impact on the fetus’s health, it may be best to minimize exposure to any such products that may contain the chemical. A simple weight loss solution for those struggling with dieting

Since it’s not so easy to achieve effective weight loss simply via diet management and exercise, people are now opting for herbal and pharmaceutical medicines for this purpose. In recent times, there are multiple debates going on regarding the use of Forskolin for weight loss and boosting the metabolism.

Forskolin is an aromatic herbal ingredient which is extracted from the roots of an Indian herb plectranthus barbatus, belonging to the family lamiacea. For centuries, this plant has been in use for diverse medical purposes owing to its pharmacological benefits.

Here, we’ve presented a comprehensive, research-based analysis of how Forskolin is really beneficial in healthy weight loss.

How Does Forskolin Work To Cause Fat Metabolism?

It’s scientifically proven that Forskolin is a natural stimulator and regulator of an enzyme adenylate cyclase which in turn stimulates the synthesis of cAMP i.e. Cyclic Adenosine Monophosphate. Most of the health benefits of Forskolin are linked with this mechanism. This is because cAMP leads to the formation of ATP i.e. Adenosine Triphosphate which is the basic energy resource of our body and has multiple functions such as:

  • Decrease in blood pressure
  • Decrease in inflammatory reactions of the body
  • Prevention of platelet aggregation
  • Causing bronchodilation to assist breathing

But the most beneficial characteristic of cAMP is its ability to stimulate the production of such hormones in the body which activate and potentiate the lipid-burning mechanism i.e. lipolysis [1] .CAMP basically belongs to a specific group of chemicals called as ‘second messenger’. These chemicals indirectly work by increasing the activity of certain neurotransmitters in the brain which signal the brain to release such hormones which cause the release of fat from the fat cells. One of these hormones is testosterone which is increased in the body with the use Forskolin, thereby having a significant increase in fat-metabolism in the body [2].

Does Forskolin Have Significant Effect On Weight Loss?

Untill today, only two major and authentic scientific studies have been carried out to analyze the effects of Forskolin on weight loss in humans.

In one study, the changes in the body composition and hormonal levels were studied with the consumption of Forskolin in obese and overweight men. It was a comparative, double-blind study which was conducted on a total of 30 subjects. Since it was a comparative study, 15 men were treated with Forskolin while 15 were given placebo for twelve weeks.

It was observed that the subjects treated with Forskolin showed favorable alterations in their body composition by a significant decrease in their total fat mass and body fat percentage, because of an increase in their serum testosterone levels , whereas, no such effects were observed in subjects which were given placebo. Hence, it was concluded from the study that Forskolin can be used as a possible pharmacological agent for the management and treatment of obesity. [3]

The second study was conducted on mildly overweight women to check the effects of Forskolin on body composition and to determine the safety of supplementation. The results obtained from the study suggested that Forskolin didn’t promote significant weight loss; however, it did help to stop further weight gain in overweight females, with no threatening side effects. [4]

Hence, it can be concluded that Forskolin can have mild effect on weight loss along with significant lipid-metabolism and a decrease in total body fat percentage. However, more scientific evidence is needed to support or strengthen its use as a potential weight-reducing agent.

Forskolin Dosage

The recommended dosage of Forskolin is about 25 to 60mg\day, in order to allow the body to adjust and adapt to Forskolin consumption. 125mg and 250mg Forskolin tablets are also available in the market. What you need to consider is whether you’re getting Forskolin’s pure natural extract or not. Always choose a supplement which has at least 20% pure Forskolin extract or more.

Are There Any Adverse Effects Associated With Forskolin Consumption?

After aggressive testing and comprehensive research studies, it was concluded that there are no threatening adverse effects associated with Forskolin intake [4] However, significant lowering of blood pressure was observed in individuals who were consuming 150mg of Forskolin per day. So it’s recommended to consult a registered medical practitioner if you’re already taking other anti-hypertensive agents so that the doses are tapered accordingly and there’s no threat for the patient of slipping into life-threatening hypotension.

Also, Forskolin can act as a fluctuating blood thinner, hence, if you’re consuming other blood thinners such as; Aspirin, Heparin, or Warfarin, it’s recommended not to start Forskolin therapy without a doctor’s recommendation.

Other than that, the common side effects of Forskolin are mild daytime dizziness and nausea. Forskolin has been awarded NOAEL i.e. ‘No Observed Adverse Effect Level’ in a scientific study regarding Forskolin consumption and its safety. This means that as long as Forskolin is consumed as per the recommended dose in healthy individuals, it’s safe and well-tolerated with no potential harmful effects. [5]

Pregnant and breast-feeding women are strongly recommended not to start Forskolin therapy without proper consultation with their gynecologist as Forskolin may cross the placental barrier and induce harmful effects in the fetus such as thinning of blood and lowering of blood pressure. Also, children under the age of 18 shouldn’t start Forskolin consumption without getting proper recommended dose according to their BMI i.e. Body Mass Ratio.

Other Medical Benefits of Forskolin Therapy

Forskolin supplements have also shown the following health benefits:

  • Relief in asthma and COPD i.e. Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder because of bronchodilation i.e. widening of bronchioles [6]
  • Decreased risk of osteoporosis development because of an increase in bone mineral density [7].
  • Proper maintenance of muscle mass because of increased testosterone secretion.

What Can We Conclude?

Forskolin surely doesn’t cause magic weight-loss within a short span of time. However, if you happen to be overweight and are looking to get a well-toned body, Forskolin can assist you in achieving a healthier, leaner body by increasing your lipid metabolism and decreasing your BF i.e. Total Body Fat.
